What is Helicobacter pylori (HP)?

Helicobacter pylori, referred to as HP (Helicobocton Pyloni), is Gram-negative, with arc-shaped, S-shaped or spiral-shaped bacteria, flagella, and active movement. It is a spiral, slightly anaerobic bacterium that has very demanding growth conditions. It lives in various areas of the stomach and duodenum, causing mild chronic inflammation of the gastric mucosa, leading to gastric and duodenal ulcers and gastric cancer. It is the only known microbial species that can survive in the human stomach and is classified as a Class 1 carcinogen by the World Health Organization's International Agency for Research on Cancer.

Commonly used detection methods for Helicobacter pylori

01

 Breath test

Breath tests include C-13 and C-14 breath tests. Both are methods of diagnosing diseases by collecting the components of the patient's exhaled gas and analyzing the differences between them and the components of the exhaled gas of normal people.

✅Advantages: non-invasive and highly accurate.

❌Disadvantages: susceptible to drug interference, C-14 is not suitable for children and pregnant women.

02

Serological testing

Blood tests are done, but a positive result can only indicate that the infection has occurred recently or is currently ongoing, and it is difficult to evaluate the eradication effect.

✅Advantages: convenient, most suitable for epidemiological surveys.

❌Disadvantages: Requires blood draw; cannot be used as a test for current Helicobacter pylori infection.

03

Gastroscopy

While doing the gastroscopy, 1-2 pieces of gastric tissue are taken for examination, mainly including rapid urease test, histological examination and Helicobacter pylori culture.

✅Advantage:High accuracy of test results

❌Shortcoming:It is traumatic and may cause nausea, vomiting, pain and other discomforts to the subject.

04

Colloidal gold detection method

The subjects only need to collect stool samples without taking any reagents orally. It is suitable for patients of all ages (including children and the elderly) and all types (including pregnant women) and has no toxic reactions. Since the test is for Hp antigen, it can accurately reflect the Hp infection situation, and a positive result can be identified as Hp infection.

✅Advantage:The method is simple, anyone is not restricted and it is highly safe.

❌Shortcoming:Keep the feces.
